Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, nor a nutritionist, all I have is my own experience to share with you guys. This is my personal weight loss journey. Also, all these tips worked for me, but that doesn’t mean that it will automatically work for you. I think you would agree that we all have different bodies, metabolisms, conditions, morphologies, and so on. So I'll share what worked for me. Hopefully this will help and motivate you for your journey.

Introduction

In this post, I will share my experience and tips to lose 10 kg in 3 months without using any supplements or fat burners. A little about myself, I’m in my early 30s and work as an IT consultant and work from home. Over the last few years, I’ve not been physically active in sports or other outdoor activities. Before starting my weight loss journey, I was 103 kg. I love to eat bakery food (muffins, scones, cakes) and Indian sweets such ras malai, gulab jamun, jalebi etc. My weight loss journey was challenging due to cravings for food I love to eat. Let’s get started.

Why did I decide to lose weight ?

First reason for losing weight was simply that I wasn’t happy with myself. Even though, I used to wear XL size T-shirts and there were plenty of choices whenever I went shopping. Even expensive clothes do not look good when we have belly fat. This always makes me a little sad and low so I decided to lose weight. Second reason was to improve stamina. I used to get tired after a short run or playing outdoors with my daughter. These two reasons were good enough to start.

Goal Settings

I challenged myself to lose 10 kgs in 3 months and promised to keep going regardless of the outcome. Self motivation is most important for weight loss journey. WIthout it, most people will fail. If there is no strong reason to lose weight, hitting a snooze alarm would happen more often. If there are no results, the journey might end faster than planned. I listen to a lot of motivational videos on YouTube to keep me motivated.

First approach – 5 km daily walk without dieting

I used to walk 5 kms every day for a few weeks so that my body could get used to my new routine. Initially, I wasn’t paying too much attention to my diet. For the first three weeks, I didn’t lose much weight. After my morning walk, I used to get tired and hungry so I ate more often. I was eating anything available at home without worrying about calories and sugars. This was a tough time as my efforts on weight loss had no progress due to my eating habits.

Intermittent fasting and running

After doing more research online, I came across a few articles on intermittent fasting. I decided to give it a go. For those who don’t know, per Wikipedia “Intermittent fasting, also known as intermittent energy restriction, is an umbrella term for various meal timing schedules that cycle between voluntary fasting (or reduced calorie intake) and non-fasting over a given period. Methods of intermittent fasting include alternate-day fasting, periodic fasting, and daily time-restricted feeding”

New plan was drafted, I decided to eat between 11am to 7 pm and continue running. I had amazing results within a few days. I used to eat a couple of toasts with tea in the morning. Skipping breakfast wasn’t easy. I found an alternative to control hunger, it was a black coffee which has zero calories. It kept me going till afternoon.

Longer runs on alternative days with intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting and running was working but energy levels started to drop on some days. Another change was made. I decided to go for longer runs on alternative days and still continue intermittent fasting. This worked really well. Having a day break was helpful to relax and prepare myself mentally. I kept pushing myself to run longer and was able to run up to 10 kms in the 10th week. I felt great and accomplished.

What did I eat ?

I never took any weight loss pills, fat burners or any protein shakes. I did not cook anything special for me either and used to eat whatever was cooked at home. Sugar and carbohydrate intakes were reduced. Added fruits and nuts to my diet and drank plenty of water every day.
